Unexpected shifts in cell populations revise understanding of aging process

If you looked at two snapshots of the same maple tree taken in July and December, you'd see a dramatic change from summer's full green crown to winter's bare branches. What those two photos don't show you, however, is how the change occurred—gradually or all at once? In truth, deciduous trees tend to hold out for an environmental signal—a change in light or temperature—and then shed all their leaves within just a week or two.

Tech stocks surge Wednesday, Dow Jones drops 99 points

NEW YORK, New York - Technology stocks bolted on Wednesday pushing the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite to a new all-time closing high. The November consumer price index came in at 0.3 percent, or an annualized 2.7 percent, broadly in line with expectations. The reading enhances the already-strong view that the Fed will cut official interest rates at its next meeting.

Scientists look to mid-Pliocene to inform future behavior of East Asian summer monsoon

The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) stands as the most northerly extending monsoon system, defined by its remarkable seasonal march. It features a stepwise northward migration of rainfall stages, starting with the pre-Meiyu season in southern China in mid-May, progressing into the Meiyu season (known as Baiu in Japan and Changma in Korea) from mid-June to mid-July, and ultimately extending to northern China by mid-July.

VOA Persian: Canada says conscription service in Iran's Revolutionary Guard does not bar entry

In response to an inquiry from VOA Persian, the Canadian government stated that compulsory conscription in Iran’s armed forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), does not necessarily result in former conscripts being barred from entering Canada. The IRGC has been added to Canada’s list of terrorist organizations, but a Canadian government spokesman said those fleeing Iran who were required to serve with the Iranian force would not be barred from Canada.
