Troy salt pile moving for waterfront development

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The city of Troy and American Rock Salt agreed to move the waterfront salt pile over the next three years. Moving the salt pile opens the door to future revitalization and access to the Hudson River as part of Troy's Comprehensive Plan, according to Mayor Carmella Mantello.

Troy City Council will vote on the agreement to move the salt pile during a special meeting on Thursday. The meeting is at 6 p.m. in City Hall on River Street and is open to the public.

Mantello added that negotiations with the company about relocating the salt pile would lead to an opportunity to develop the local economy while also settling three multi-million-dollar lawsuits against the city. "This change will allow us to better utilize our waterfront as the front door to economic development and revitalization, including the opportunity for land and water trails and recreational opportunities," she said.

American Rock Salt chairman Gunther Buerman said the settlement gives the city enough time to relocate to a new facility, ensuring safe transportation during harsh winters and continuing to provide salt. Troy City Council President Sue Steele said the negotiation comes after a decade-long effort to relocate the salt pile.
