High Likelihood for Tropical Development in Southern Gulf

A broad area of low pressure is forming across the southern Gulf of Mexico in the Bay of Campeche and is likely to become a tropical system in the next 2 to 5 days. This disturbance is producing numerous amounts of showers and storms in Central America, as well as, pushing tropical moisture to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Conditions are favorable for further development but the impacts to Acadiana should remain minimal as it tracks towards Mexico. The National Hurricane Center forecasts a 70% chance that this disturbance will become at least a tropical depression. The first name on the list this year is Alberto.

Any tropical system that forms should continue a northwesterly track toward Mexico or the southern tip of Texas. The main impacts will be felt across those areas and will stay far enough south from Acadiana. As of today, we are only expecting higher rain chances and heavy rains over the next few days.
