But he was found with fatal chest injuries last month between the wagon and a wall on Bardsey Island, off North Wales.

Senior coroner Kate Robertson said the vehicle “appears to have started to roll backwards” after Mr Lamont had got out.

Ms Robertson said that sometime before 4.47pm on June 19 “the motor vehicle wagon, which he had been driving, appears to have started to roll backwards when he was out of the wagon.”

She said: “ He was found lying between the rear of the wagon and a stone wall, resulting in fatal injuries to him.”

A post-mortem gave a provisional cause of death as “crush injuries to the chest and abdomen”.

It was said Mr Lamont was a machine operator from Bridgnorth, Shrops.

He was employed on a casual basis by the trust that runs the island — which is only accessible by boat — and worked the summer months.

The inquest in Caernarfon was adjourned until a later date.
