Polio Vaccine campaign begins across 23 provinces of Afghanistan

The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan announced on Monday, July 8th, that the Polio Eradication Vaccination Campaign has commenced in 23 provinces nationwide.

Shafat Zaman, the Ministry of Public Health spokesperson, stated on Sunday on its social media platform X that this campaign will continue for four days.

He emphasized that during this process, eight million children under the age of five will receive the polio vaccine.

The World Health Organization has also reported the launch of this campaign and urged all citizens, especially parents, to “do their part to make Afghanistan polio-free.”

Notably, in the second round of the polio vaccination campaign last month, in collaboration with international agencies, more than 11.2 million children were vaccinated.

Earlier, the organization known as “Afghanistan Polio-Free” had announced the start of the polio vaccination campaign in several provinces of the country, which will continue for another two days.

According to reports, since March 2024, five polio cases have been reported in the provinces of Nuristan, Kandahar, Herat, and Ghazni.

It should be noted that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where polio or childhood paralysis has not yet been eradicated.

Efforts such as the ongoing polio vaccination campaign underscore Afghanistan’s commitment to eradicating this disease despite ongoing challenges.

The collaboration with international organizations and the dedication of health officials aim to ensure a polio-free future for Afghanistan’s children amidst the global efforts to eliminate polio altogether.
