75-year-old New Iberia man fatally struck by vehicle

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A 75-year-old New Iberia man was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday night when setting up traffic cones on Louisiana Highway 83, Louisiana State Police said.

According to an announcement from state police, Francis Firmin was setting up triangular traffic cones in the southbound lane of LA 83, south of Highway 14, in an attempt to recover his vehicle that was stuck in a ditch. At around 10 p.m., a 2002 Ford Mustang that was traveling on LA 14 struck Firmin.

Firmin was severely injured, police said. Firmin was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

State police said the driver of the Ford was properly restrained and was not injured in the crash.

Although impairment is not suspected, state police said they collected standard toxicology samples from all parties and submitted them for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
