The Royals returned to league duty with a fantastic 2-0 victory against Wigan Athletic at the SCL Stadium on Saturday.

On a day when our new owners were watching, Reading went ahead after seven minutes through Charlie Savage. We doubled our lead in the second half through Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan to secure three points.

Manager Ruben Selles was pleased with his side’s dominant display. Here is what he had to say to the Reading Chronicle.

Selles on the performance

“The boys played a really good game. We were dominant from the very beginning and showed that we wanted to win the game.

“We scored the first goal and had some chances to score the second but had a bit of a setback in the middle of the first half where they had a bit of control, and we didn’t get the pressure for 10 minutes. There was a player down and we fixed the pressure and started to win more balls and become dominant in possession.

“The second half we suffered in the first 10 minutes until we scored and from 2-0, we managed the game well. They are a well-coached team and we expected that they could put us under pressure but the boys managed brilliantly. I’m very proud of what they did and the way they have been working. Now, we have to be consistent.”

Selles on Harvey Knibbs

“He had a problem with his groin yesterday during training. We scanned that yesterday and he will be out for three or four weeks.”

Selles on Femi Azeez

“We know how important Femi has been for us and how good he is. After the small injury in his back last week, we were able to play him.

“He needed to wait his time because the players playing in that position are doing amazing. when he came on the pitch, he gave us everything, which he has been doing his entire time at Reading.”

Selles on Rob Couhig impact

“We suffered a lot last season at the beginning of the season - a lot of things against us. Our real target for now is to be consistent and to try to prove how good we can be together - every day and every minute.

“This is our real target from now on. Rob and his group are impressed with what we are doing, and they will be very supportive of us.”
