But after 21 years in theatre she finally hit screens in Kevin Costner‘s Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves.

She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

Over the 80s and 90s she starred in a host of movies including Independence Day, Grand Canyon, Sneakers and Tiger Warsaw.

Mary also had a regular stint in American soap opera As the World Turns.

She made a comeback to television when she appeared on Grey’s Anatomy for three episodes in 2008 and 2009.

She later went on to star in American police drama The Closer, playing the role of Capt. Sharon Raydor.

But aged 72 now, Mary looks like she’s ageing backwards with her recent snaps.

The mum-of-two regularly posts on Instagram, showing off her natural greying hair.

Mary also shares work updates with her fans as well as her activism.

Just last month she showed off her incredible figure for an Entertainment Weekly photoshoot.
