Consider Korean Warvet for library name

Re: “Milpitas considers library name change” (Page B1, Aug. 23).

Denny Weisgerber must be considered for the Milpitas Library name change.

He is a former mayor of Milpitas, a Korean War veteran, a Marine and a war hero. Every Memorial Day a line of people would be eagerly waiting to shake his hand. He passed in 2019 and is very much missed.

I truly hope his name is considered alongside Jose Esteves.

If character counts, election choice is easy

Re: Nick Anderson cartoon (Page A8, Aug. 25).

The political cartoon showing Donald Trump picking up the dead RFK Jr.’s campaign in the form of a dead bear was spot on.

What are we looking for in the character of our next President? Our President, at a minimum, should swear to protect and defend our Constitution; agree to a peaceful transfer of power; and be ethical, do not lie about “stolen” elections and agree that our voting system is safe and secure (the real bedrock of a healthy democracy).

I am usually referred to as a “liberal” when I criticize Trump. I am not a liberal. I am not a member of either the Democratic or Republican Party.

If you believe character is important, you have an easy decision this November.

Rise in deaths fromheat calls for change

Re: “Heat-related deaths spiked 117% in the US since 1999” (Aug. 26).

A 117% rise in heat-related deaths in a short span of just over two decades is shocking. Dangerously though, this number may just be a scratch on the surface as these deaths are often difficult to account for. As residents of the Bay Area, we live in climate’s favorite pocket — with year-round moderate temperatures and clean air. But this geographical reality too is changing. As this summer showed, soaring mercury levels have made their way to our homes.

Now, more than ever, we must minimize our negative environmental fallouts while bracing ourselves to deal with the unavoidable consequences of historic fossil fuel dependence. There is no better time than now for residents to drive electrification in our homes and demand a carbon dividend fee from big polluters. Elections can be fought over many disagreements, but the election where we agree to fight for climate is the “hottest.”

Carbon Removal Actneeds residents’ PR

Startups around Silicon Valley know being a “trailblazer” isn’t easy. I was in Sacramento recently volunteer-lobbying for support of SB 308, introduced by Sen. Josh Becker, to strengthen carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Unfortunately, it didn’t make it through the Assembly Appropriation Committee.

New ideas need tons of PR to get voters comfortable before they vote. This is especially true in times of budget cuts and greater needs as California grapples with climate disasters and homeless needs.

As a grandmother-to-be, I’m all for CDR to safely take carbon out of the air and reach net-zero faster because environmental-related respiratory issues are on the rise in our family. Learn about CDR and help make it a household name. Have as many conversations as you can to demystify it and get folks comfortable with it, then write your representatives.
