Kansas to receive $1.5m for MoneyGram settlement

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The state of Kansas will receive $1.5 million in settlement funds from the state of Delaware for unclaimed property funds in connection to several lawsuits involving Delaware company MoneyGram.

On Friday, Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson and Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced the conclusion of the multistate litigation. According to a press release from the attorney general's office, Delaware argued that unclaimed property funds should remain in Delaware, the home of MoneyGram.

A coalition of 29 states argued that funds from MoneyGram checks should go to the states where the unclaimed property was from. A settlement was reached wherein 30 states will receive over $102 million from property that was reported to Delaware between 2011 and 2017.

Additionally, about $89 million MoneyGram had in a litigation account from 2018 to 2022 will be split between the 30 states.

"This settlement will ease the ability for Kansans to located over $1.5 million in missing MoneyGram funds improperly held by the state of Delaware," Johnson said. "These funds will eventually be part of our statewide outreach efforts to reunite unclaimed property funds with the rightful owners."
