Tottenham have confirmed first-team departure

Tottenham have announced that Giovani Lo Celso has departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having joined former club Real Betis on a permanent deal.

A statement on the official Spurs site read: “We have reached agreement with Real Betis for the transfer of Giovani Lo Celso.

“The move marks a return to the La Liga side for Gio, who joined us from Los Verdiblancos in August, 2019, initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer in January, 2020.

“The playmaker marked his first start for the Club with a goal in a 4-0 win against Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League in November, 2019 and reached his Spurs century of appearances against Luton Town in March, 2024. He went on to make 108 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

“Internationally, Gio was part of the Argentina squad that lifted the Copa America in 2021 and defended their title this summer. Unfortunately, he missed out on La Albiceleste’s World Cup win in 2022 due to injury.”

Lo Celso was out of contract at the end of the season and had been deemed surplus to requirements by the club, having been omitted from the squad for the friendly against Bayern Munich in North London.

Despite barely playing for Spurs last season, Lo Celso appeared in five of Argentina’s six Copa America matches this summer, providing the assist for the goal which won the tournament.

Giovani Lo Celso’s time at Tottenham is over

The midfielder joined Spurs in 2019 but failed to nail down a permanent place in the side in the following five years and was loaned out to Villarreal in both 2021/22 and 2022/23.

He made just 108 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, 24 of which came last season.

His best moment last season arguably came at the Etihad Stadium when he came off the bench to score in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City back in December.

Lo Celso’s struggles at Tottenham have been clear to see and his injury record certainly have not helped matters.

He was never able to perform consistently or stay fit for a good run of games and replicate the form which he continues to produce whenever called up for international duty with Argentina.
