World champion hints he could quit darts and retire ‘tomorrow’ as he admits side hustle is ‘doing well’

GERWYN PRICE has revealed he could finish darts “tomorrow” thanks to his thriving fish and chip shop.

The Welshman, 39, is a former rugby star who swapped the sport for the oche and triumphed at Ally Pally in 2021.

However, he has not reached any PDC major finals this year and finished seventh out of eight in the 2024 Premier League with just 12 points.

The world No6 is also still yet to qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts in November – an event he has won three times in the last six years.

But Price now has other interests and revealed back in May that he was working on opening a fish and chip shop in Markham, Wales.

He has converted a pharmacy into a takeaway establishment in Caerphilly.

And it has given him a more relaxed attitude about darts, with Price even hinting at a potential retirement.

Speaking to Online Darts, he said: “I’m sort of in the mindset now that, I’ll turn up and play in whatever events I’m in and if I’m not in them, I don’t really care.

“I’ve built a platform so to speak, for me to just do what I want to do. If I fall outside the top 64 and finish darts tomorrow, I really don’t care. I’m just going to start enjoying darts now, turn up when I want to turn up and when I have to turn up.

“I think, in previous years, it’s been darts first and family life after but that’s going to change now.

“It’s going to be family life first, darts after. My main priority is back at home.”

He then went on to explain that the fish and chip shop could allow him to retire from darts in the near-future.

Price added: “It eases the pressure on you, but sometimes those pressures are a good thing for you.

“When I first started, I was eager, I wanted to win, I wanted to be in everything and now, I’ve sort of done everything I’ve wanted to do and I don’t have that urgency anymore.

“Hopefully it’ll come back. I’ll keep trying as long as I can you know, but yeah, now the chippy is doing well you never know, retirement could be sooner rather than later.”
