The app, LG Movies & TV, is being rolled out to LG smart TV owners across the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy.

It is currently available to all owners of a 2023 or 2024 LG smart TV – and will automatically show up on their smart TV dashboards.

It is also compatible with some 2022 TV models – namely 2022 LG Full HD, UHD and select QNED TV models.

But bosses are planning on rolling out the service to the remainder of 2022 model owners by the end of the year.

The app does not require a subscription – instead, allowing users to buy or rent movies on a case-by-case basis.

It was launched by TV manufacturer LG Electronics in partnership with streaming giant Rakuten TV.

Sidharth Jayant, Chief Product Officer at Rakuten TV, said: “We are excited to expand our strategic partnership with LG.

“This collaboration underscores Rakuten TV’s commitment to being at the forefront of premium entertainment, bringing the best of global cinema into the homes of our European viewers.”

LG is one of the manufacturers to also have their own sets of special channels built directly within the set.

It’s available via an app called LG Channels and boasts a huge variety of content, from reality TV with Real Housewives, to top dramas and cartoons for kids.

News of the new LG Movies & TV streaming service comes after Sky also launched a new app under the name U – previously UKTV.
