LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Porch pirates are scamming people out of their packages even before reaching the porch.

The BBB had reports of scammers posing as delivery services, texting consumers pretending that they were having issues delivering their packages.

Chris Babin, Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, said the text asks for personal information or contains a link that infects your device to steal your personal information.

"There's no number to call. There's nobody to contact," Babin said. "They just say that they represent one of the large shipping services."

There are different variations of the text message. In another version of the scam, they say the package was delivered but was stolen.

"They want you to provide financial information in order to get the package redelivered or redistributed to you again," Babin said. "And in all of these instances, they're just trying to steal money."

They're also mimicking "missed delivery" notices in person.

"Actual notices are left on people's doors," Babin said. "So, getting away from sending a text message, same kind of concept, but leaving an actual message or a paper on somebody's door saying that they missed the delivery."

Here are some ways to avoid delivery scams:

• Take precautions to ensure a safe delivery. Purchase shipping insurance, get tracking numbers for your order and check the shipping progress often.
• Watch out for texts about a missed delivery. Go directly to the delivery carrier's website instead of clicking on links in messages.
• Request a signature when ordering. The package won't be left if you don't sign for it, ensuring thieves won't have the opportunity to take it.
• Don't leave packages sitting on your doorstep. If you aren't home, have your package delivered to your workplace or have a trusted neighbor accept the delivery for you.
• Open your delivery upon arrival. Check for damage and signs of tampering, and contact the seller if there are any issues with your order.
