Three takeaways from Bears' loss to Vikings

The Bears played overtime for the first time in four years and found another agonizing way to fall short Sunday in a 30-27 loss to the Vikings:

The five-timers club

The Bears have lost five consecutive games, with three of the losses coming on the last play. Amazingly, the Bears have had skids of five games or more in 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Quarterback Caleb Williams said that, despite the obvious frustration, he doesn’t see his teammates letting up.

“That’s definitely encouraging,” he said. “You don’t want to be around people that are quitting, giving up. That’s not the type of guys we have.”

J.J. vs. J.J.

Wide receiver Jordan Addison had eight catches for a career-high 162 yards. The Bears handled Justin Jefferson better, holding him to two receptions for 27 yards.

Jefferson, perhaps the league’s best wide receiver, hurt the Bears in other ways, drawing pass interference on Jaylon Johnson that gave the Vikings the ball at the Bears’ 6 in the second quarter and another on Johnson in the third quarter that converted a third-and-three. He had a 20-yard catch in overtime.

No run game

Running back D’Andre Swift ran 13 times for only 30 yards, and backup Roschon Johnson had two yards on as many carries. Williams was the team’s best rusher, scrambling six times for 33 yards. The Bears can’t repeat that formula Thursday against the high-scoring Lions.

Latest on the Bears
The Bears played overtime for the first time in four years and found another agonizing way to fall short Sunday in a 30-27 loss to the Vikings.
Caleb Williams stepped up when the Bears had a chance to steal a victory. His OT sack was a rookie mistake he figures to learn from. Matt Eberflus’ team showed admirable resilience in rallying from a 27-16 deficit in the final 1:56 of regulation but still looked poorly coached.
It was the latest chapter in a nightmare five-game losing streak by the Bears, who saw games end with a Commanders Hail Mary and, last week, the Packers blocking a potential game-winning Cairo Santos field goal at the gun. In between, the Bears lost to the Cardinals and Patriots.
