Kansas gas prices heading into Thanksgiving holiday

KANSAS (KSNT) - Kansas has some of the cheapest gas in the nation ahead of Thanksgiving, according to AAA.

On Monday, AAA issued a press release listing the cheapest gas in the nation ahead of the holiday. According to the report, Kansas ranks 5th for the cheapest gas at $2.706 per gallon. Kansas gas prices are currently 24 cents lower than the same time last year.

AAA said gas prices this year are lower than in 2023. Last year the national average for unleaded was $3.26 but this year prices are around $3.05 following a 9-cent decline over the last month.

According to the AAA, 861,580 Kansans are expected to hit the road for the holiday, a 2% increase from last year. AAA said those Kansans will travel 50 miles or more. Of those traveling, 90.4% were expected to make the trip by road, a 1.4% increase from 2023.

Earlier this month AAA shared some Kansas travel projections:

  • 2.1% of people will travel by air. AAA expects a 1.7% increase in Kansas air travel.
  • 2.3 million people nationwide are expected to travel by other modes of transportation like trains and buses. AAA says Kansas travel by other modes will be up 12.9% this year compared to 2023.
  • In 2023, 2,448 AAA roadside service calls were made during the Thanksgiving period.
