2024 Review
The Mets traded for Ryne Stanek from the Seattle Mariners at the 2024 trade deadline for minor-league outfielder Rhylan Thomas. At the time of the trade, Stanek pitched to a 4.38 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 39 innings with 17 walks. The Mets traded for him primarily due to his 100 MPH fastball and solid splitter, but there were concerns about his control.
Upon arriving in Queens, Stanek initially struggled, allowing three earned runs in his first appearance as a Met and four runs in his fifth appearance against his old team. Despite this, his ERA dropped from 5.63 in August to 4.05 in September. Stanek was able to curb some of his control issues while not allowing many hits, and he allowed one home run in August & September. He provided stability in the back end of the bullpen after Dedniel Nunez went on the injured list and handled some of the seventh-inning duties.
Stanek performed much better in the playoffs, becoming an integral part of their bullpen and pitching to a 3.38 ERA over eight innings, striking out eight and walking three.
2025 Overview
Stanek is a free agent and may be looking for a similar contract to the one he received for the 2024 season. However, based on his peripherals, he may have to settle for a one-year deal with more money tied into incentives. While Stanek may have more gas left in the tank, his stats have been trending in the wrong direction after his stellar 2022 season with the Houston Astros. A focus on keeping his fastball up in the zone and refining his slider, which he threw 16% of the time and batters slugged .542 against, could help keep his ERA down.
