Google Maps makes major change that affects all drivers – don’t ignore new alert

GOOGLE Maps has added a new feature to the app that all motorists need to be aware of.

The platform is following in the footsteps of Waze – which Google also owns – with a new form of alert that may come in handy.

Google Maps allows users to report a number of incidents, from road blocks to accidents, all to help others get from A to B smoothly.

Google Maps has long had speed trap alerts to warn people of speeding hotspots.

But these reports are being replaced by a new generic police tag that encompasses all presence of the police on the road, Android Authority reports.

The “add a report” page now shows a police tag higher up, as part of the overhaul.

So far, users have only reported seeing the changes on the mobile app.

There’s no indication whether it shows up on Android Auto or Apple CarPlay just yet.

Waze – which has had this feature for a while now – allows people to report police sightings along their route to help improve the driving experience of fellow users, Google’s website says.

The tech giant only recently added real-time incident report options to Android Auto having existed on the mobile app for sometime.

Google acquired Waze in June for $1.3billion (£1.02billion) and has been slowly bringing much of the popular features there to Google Maps.

Over the summer, Waze gained new camera alerts that show you the type of camera you’re approaching, whether it’s a speed camera or one designed to catch people running red lights.
