11/28/2024: Messy Thanksgiving with rain & snow

The latest Storm Tracker Forecast from meteorologist Matt Mackie:

It's a bit of a dicey travel day... hopefully you're already where you need to be on this Thanksgiving Day! If not, go slow on the roads. Temperatures are cold enough for rain snow mix and slippery coatings on the roads in many valley locations this morning. While many of us will flip to rain as temperatures inch upwards during the day, it could end up flipping back to snow as we cool down this evening.

The mountains look more consistently snowy from start to finish. That will lead to far more accumulation. Totals range from a couple inches around Albany to a foot or more in the southern Adirondacks.

Travel will be most dangerous for areas highlighted in pink below, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 1 AM Friday. A Winter Weather Advisory is up for areas in Purple, where impacts may not be as severe but roads will still be slippery in spots.

A few flurries linger into Black Friday, but the bulk of the action is today. The weekend is cool and breezy in the Capital District, but mainly dry. Meanwhile, the western Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley could see lake effect snow showers.

We could all see periods of light, scattered snow during the following work week. Very fitting weather to welcome in the month of December!
