Reay Tames Grizzlies with 37-save Performance

Colin Reay made 37 saves in his Spruce Kings debut as they defeated the Victoria Grizzlies 2-1 on Friday night at the Q Centre.

It was a scoreless first period with a couple of good chances for both teams, but nobody was able to capitalize on a frame that saw three power plays.

In the second period, Nicolas Papineau got his third of the season getting the Spruce Kings on the board as he put a rebound home. Isaac Holt had the initial chance in front off a pass from Will Moore at 4:45.

Skogen Schrott widened the lead to 2-0 at 17:37 during a segment of 4 on 4 hockey, as Trent LeDrew spotted him at the top of the left circle, and Schrott moved towards the goal with a nifty shot past Oliver Auyeung-Ashton.

Less than a minute later, the Grizzlies would get their Teddy Bear Toss goal from Stone Rolston, which did go to review for goaltender interference, and although it appeared Reay’s pad was pushed towards the goal, it counted and the teams headed for an early intermission as the bears were picked up.

There was no scoring in the third, but four minutes of 4 on 4 again, as the Spruce Kings killed the lone penalty, with Reay making multiple stops in the last three minutes with the Victoria net empty.
