Last week, the Indian government took initiatives to revive farm reforms amidst a march by farmers in some parts of North India seeking legal guarantee for minimum support prices for their produce. As part of its efforts to control food inflation, the Government set off the sale of wheat under the open market sale scheme, which witnessed an overwhelming response. However, its rice procurement programme so far has witnessed a drop of 5 lakh tonnes. Agricultural production could face problems if Australia’s global weather outlook showing below-normal winter rainfall for India turns true. The cheerful news is that coffee growers are harvesting record record-high prices and the Centre is advocating a shift in crops to tackle stubble burning.
