Sainsbury’s is selling an iconic retro Cadbury chocolate tin that’s perfect for Christmas – and it only costs £5

A MAJOR supermarket is selling the iconic Cadbury chocolate tin – and it’s now only £5 for loyalty card customers.

Shoppers are rushing to buy the Cadbury Mixed Chunks Tin at Sainsbury’s, saying they “need” to get their hands on the festive favourite.

The 380g tin usually costs £7.50, but those with a Nectar card can get it for just £5.

The selection tin, which is advertised as “for someone special”, includes individually wrapped chunks of classic Dairy Milk as well as the whole nut and caramel versions.

Some readers may remember that Cadbury used to sell selection boxes in tins rather than in the plastic tubs usually seen on supermarket shelves now.

One Facebook user on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group said: “I can remember when they first went on sale, they were a tenner.”

Another commented: “I need some of these.”

Supermarket shoppers who have already managed to stock up on the retro tins say they make for a great stocking filler – if you can resist opening them before Christmas.

One reviewer on the Sainsbury’s website wrote: “Just saw it on offer in Sainsbury’s recently, & knowing my husband loves Cadbury chocs, I thought it would be good to keep for Christmas

“Unfortunately it hasn’t lasted that long, as once it was opened, we couldn’t resist the individually wrapped surprise parcels! As usual lovely chocolate & yummy centres to choose from. Also…super tin to keep for biscuits. Great job Cadbury.”

Another said: “Got this as a stocking filler but not sure who until the festive season. I may even keep this myself as I love the tin. I would use it for my Cadburys favourites. Yum!”

A third said they had bought a tin two weeks ago and the chocolates are now “all gone… Best chocs ever”.

If you want even better value, you can get a similar version of the tin at Ocado which is £10 for 720g (working out at £1.39 per 100g, versus £1.97 per 100g for the smaller one).

You get slightly different chocolates in this one, though – the original Dairy Milk, whole nut, white and caramilk.

You can use websites like Trolley, Price Spy and Price Runner which let you compare prices on thousands of products.

A quick search with the Google Shopping/Product tab can bring up what some retailers are selling items for too.

It’s worth going direct to discounters’ websites like B&M and Home Bargains too as they often have cheap chocs on sale.

Don’t forget, you’ll need a Sainsbury’s Nectar card to get the best deal on the Cadbury Mixed Chunks Tin.

The loyalty card, which is used by more than 18 million people in the UK, allows you to collect points when you spend at Sainsbury’s, in Argos, or at Esso petrol stations.

The points can be spent in store or converted into Avios to spend on British Airways flights.

Nectar card holders can also get lower prices on thousands of items at Sainsbury’s.

What other deals are on selection boxes this year?

Waitrose has a great deal on the Cadbury Chocolate Christmas Medium Selection Box, which is currently £1.80 down from £2.75.

You can get it even cheaper at Asda for £1.50, and the same price at Tesco if you have a Clubcard.

Clubcard holders can also get deals on the Cadbury Chocolate 200 Years Anniversary Selection Box 420g (£5.50 down from £8) and on the Cadbury Chocolate & Biscuits Favourites Selection Gift Box 370g (£4.50 down from £6).

For something a bit different, B&M is selling the Maltesers & Friends Selection Box 207g for £1.99, down from £3.75.

However, you should watch out for shrinkflation – which has seen the size of some snacks, including chocolate, getting smaller as the prices stay the same.

Consumer group Which? found that Cadbury’s family-sized bag of Mini Snowballs had shrunk from 296 grams last year to 270 grams this year.

It said the price had increased as chocolate lovers are now paying 20% more for 9% less chocolate compared with this time last year.

As well as this, the medium Santa selection box decreased from 145 grams to 125 grams – despite a huge 59% price increase at Morrisons.

Another culprit was the Nestle Dairy Box, which now has 36 treats instead of 40 in its winter collection.

The smaller version has shrunk from 20 chocolates to 16.

How to save money on chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs…

Go own brand – if you’re not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you’ll save by going for the supermarket’s own brand bars.

Shop around – if you’ve spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it’s cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you’re getting the best deal.

Look out for yellow stickers – supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they’ve been reduced.

They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.

Buy bigger bars – most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.

So if you’ve got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.
