Taylor Sheridan Topples ‘Dune: Prophecy’ on Streaming Top 10 | Chart

Last week’s Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report looked at how Max has dominated the streaming chart for most of the second half of 2024. Yet there has been another superpower lying in wait – one whose reach extends across both streaming and linear.

The force that finally toppled Max is none other than super producer, writer and hit series creator Taylor Sheridan, whose latest Paramount+ original, “Landman,” was the most-watched streaming program for the week of Dec. 2 to 8. The drama is set within the West Texas oil industry and stars Billy Bob Thornton. It’s also one of three series that bears Sheridan’s name this week, along with “Special Ops: Lioness” (No. 5 on the streaming chart) and “Yellowstone” (No. 3 on linear).

Meanwhile, Max/HBO’s latest prestige title, “Dune: Prophecy,” takes a tumble, falling from the top of the chart down to No. 9 this week.

Beyond Sheridan and “Dune,” six of the remaining seven most-watched streaming programs belong to Netflix. That list starts with “The Madness.” The conspiracy thriller series moves up two spots, to No. 2 this week. It’s followed by another Netflix thriller, “Black Doves,” which stars Keira Knightly as a spy whose secret identity is in danger.

It’s not quite espionage, but the next entry, “Our Little Secret,” has a plot that revolves around past lives and hidden details. The Lindsay Lohan-led holiday rom-com features two former partners finding out that their current beaus are brother and sister – just in time for a family Christmas gathering.

If comedy isn’t your taste, Netflix’s “Subservience” offers up a completely different flavor. The sci-fi flick stars Megan Fox as a domestic robot hired to help a family with an ailing matriarch, and is built around the critical question of what happens when AI becomes self aware.

No. 8 this week is “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” The sequel to 1988’s beloved “Beetlejuice” was a box office smash this fall, and its debut on HBO / Max was a hit with 959,000 U.S. households watching the movie over its first three days on the platform. That’s a remarkable turnout when you consider that it took six days for the movie to be watched by 542,000 U.S. households after it came out on VOD.

The final two entries – both Netflix titles – take differing looks at Christmas. “That Christmas,” at No. 8, is an animated film that tugs on the heartstrings. Finally, there’s “Mary,” a telling of the biblical story of the birth of Jesus. Neither critics nor viewers seem enthralled by the film, but enough were curious to propel the move into the No. 10 place on our chart this week.

Over on linear, we’ve officially transitioned from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Where the annual Macy’s parade topped last week’s chart, this week’s top spot belongs to “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.”

The yearly tree-lighting special aired on Dec. 4, capping a successful three-night run for NBC. The network aired the live semi-final performances of “The Voice” on Dec. 2, and that program is No. 2 on linear this week. The following night, NBC had the semi-final eliminations for “The Voice,” which attracted enough households to come in at No. 7.

The previously mentioned “Yellowstone” is No. 3 this week on Paramount, followed by “FBI” on CBS. Two airings of “Wheel of Fortune” then sneak in at No. 5 and No. 6.

Two more holiday specials crack the Top 10 this week: “CMA Country Christmas” is No. 8, followed by “Jimmy Fallon’s Holiday Seasoning Spectacular.”

Closing out the chart is an old chestnut: “NCIS,” in the middle of its 22nd season.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
