Micky van de Ven is a big loss for Tottenham

Micky van de Ven has been a brilliant addition to Tottenham’s squad since making the move from Wolfsburg in a deal worth £43m.

While the centre-back position has been a weakness at Spurs for a number of years since the departures of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, van de Ven’s partnership with Cristian Romero has been well-praised by the supporters.

The flying Dutchman’s electric pace and solid defending have been recognised, as he picked up the Official Supporters’ Clubs, One Hotspur Members and One Hotspur Juniors Player of the Season awards earlier this year (Tottenham Hotspur).

But van de Ven has experienced a number of injuries since joining the club, four of which are related to his hamstring, and there is a chance that his latest injury is in the same spot as the one which kept him out for eight games, beginning at the end of October.

Worrying update on Micky van de Ven injury at Tottenham

Many were surprised to see Romero named in Tottenham’s starting lineup to face Chelsea last Sunday and van de Ven’s return was even more shocking, considering it was reported that the club would be cautious with him when he returned to training.

Ange Postecoglou’s decision to start both players has since been heavily criticised and he has been unable to rule out the possibility that van de Ven’s latest injury could be in the exact same spot as his previous one.

It is certainly worrying to Tottenham that the Dutchman has picked up an injury in the same hamstring, but it will be even more ominous if it’s the exact same injury again.

Speaking in his press conference, Postecoglou said: “It’s the same side. Whether it’s the same one, we’ve just got to get clarity on whether it’s exactly the same spot or a new spot.” (Alasdair Gold)

Tottenham must not repeat their mistake with van de Ven

With Ben Davies already injured, it made sense for Spurs to start one of their two returning centre-halves, and Romero’s injury occurring after a skill move in his own penalty box was unlucky in all fairness. But no one would have blamed Postecoglou if van de Ven had not started, considering he was not expected to anyway.

His injury came late in the game and it looked like he was about to complete 90 minutes he was not ready to play. Now Tottenham have just one recognised central defender available to them in Radu Dragusin.

Mistakes like this must be avoided in the future and the fact van de Ven has had multiple issues with his hamstring means he should not be rushed back into playing until he is ready to do so. Otherwise, he will only be spending more time on the sidelines in the future.
