Body of man found dead metres away from Manchester nature spot

A man was found dead in a river in Greater Manchester this morning.

The man, who has not been identified, was discovered in the water around 11am on Saturday.

It is not yet known how long he has been there or how he died, but his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police have cordoned off a stretch of the River Roch, just off Peel Lane in Heywod, Rochdale.

Tape is blocking off a lane between houses and an industrial site, leading to a a tree-lined path down to a bridge across the river where it meets Wrigley Brook.

The bridge has also been sealed off.

In a statement, police said: ‘At around 11am today, Saturday, December 14, we sadly located a body of man in the water at River Roch in Heywood, Rochdale.

‘Investigations are still ongoing to formally identify the man and officers believe there to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.’
