The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel believes that Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest in Eberechi Eze in January after exploring a move for the Crystal Palace midfielder earlier this summer.

Tottenham wanted Eberechi Eze

Eze was mooted as one of the names on Spurs’ radar earlier this summer (GiveMeSport), with several outlets suggesting that the Lilywhites had explored the possibility of activating the attacking midfielder’s release clause, which was thought to be worth £60m plus add-ons (The Times).

However, the clause reportedly expired around two weeks ago (Daily Mail) and with less than 48 hours left until the window slams shut, the 25-year-old looks likely to stay put at Selhurst Park.

Mokbel has revealed that it is not just Spurs, but also most of the other big clubs across the Premier League who explored a move for Eze this window.

The journalist suggested that the England international’s fitness record was one of the reasons why clubs were hesitant to pay a big fee this summer.

Should Spurs move for Eze in January?

When asked if Spurs seriously explored a move for Eze, The Mail reporter said on Last Word on Spurs: “It would be accurate to say Tottenham had an interest in Eberechi Eze, that is accurate.

“But I know, the entire top six will have looked at Eze’s situation. Interestingly, and most important of all, none of those clubs took the plunge. I think part of the reason would have been the hamstring injuries he has struggled with over the last 18 months.

“I think clubs will look at that and say £60m is great value and he’s a fantastic player, but we need to see another season out of him, and then, let’s make that deal happen next summer. Eberechi Eze may be one you look to do in January, perhaps. Or, if not, next summer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is premature to talk about January targets as a lot can happen between now and then.

Tottenham’s priorities might totally change over the next few months depending on how the likes of Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert develop.
