Caleb Williams Takes Subtle Shot At Sam Darnold Following Vikings Game

The Chicago Bears found another heartbreaking way to lose this week, falling in overtime to the division-leading Minnesota Vikings. After an incredible comeback that included the league’s first successful onside kick recovery this season, the Bears managed to force overtime. But despite the late-game heroics, it wasn’t enough. In overtime, the Bears defense gave up a crucial drive to Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold after a quick three-and-out by the Bears offense, allowing Darnold to lead the Vikings down the field for the win.

Meanwhile, Caleb Williams had another great performance, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdown passes. His impressive showing also saw him break the franchise’s rookie passing record with six games still left in the season. Darnold, who has revitalized his career in Minnesota, continues to shine this season as well.

But after the game, during the Bears’ post-game press conference, Williams made a comment that sparked some attention. Though it didn’t seem like a direct shot at Darnold, his remarks came in response to a question about Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who had exchanged words with Williams at midfield following the game.

“They love him. Met him at the draft. When somebody comes over to you that’s having guys, having Sam Darnold even out there balling. He’s been a great coach so far I believe.”

I’m sure Caleb Williams didn’t intend it as a dig, but his comment definitely comes across as funny. That said, he does have a point—no one in the NFL expected the Vikings to be where they are now, especially after rookie QB JJ McCarthy went down earlier in the season. So while Caleb’s subtle shot is valid, credit still has to go to Sam Darnold. He’s having a Baker Mayfield-like resurgence, and that deserves recognition.
