Contentious Republican primary in Virginia too close to call

Primary voters went to the polls Tuesday in Oklahoma, Georgia and Virginia. In Virginia, a contentious Republican primary between Rep. Bob Good, who voted to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and Virginia State Sen. John McGuire, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, was too close to call on election night. New research illuminates the ecological importance of gray wolves in the American West

A study published in the journal BioScience sheds light on the importance of gray wolves in the western United States. Led by William Ripple, a scientist at Oregon State University and the Conservation Biology Institute, the research delves into the implications of large predator absence on plant and animal communities, and ecosystem functions. It calls attention to "shifting baselines" wherein increasingly degraded conditions are viewed as reflecting the historical state of a system.

Study reveals material erosion and deposition in fusion reactors

Researchers led by Prof. Luo Guangnan from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have made an important discovery about how materials break down and mix on the surfaces inside the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST). They found that material erosion is caused by excessive heat loads, particle fluxes to the first wall, and energetic ions during the plasma exposure.

Study finds cooperation can still evolve even with limited payoff memory

Direct reciprocity facilitates cooperation in repeated social interactions. Traditional models suggest that individuals learn to adopt conditionally cooperative strategies if they have multiple encounters with their partner.
