A desert moss that has the potential to grow on Mars

The desert moss Syntrichia caninervis is a promising candidate for Mars colonization thanks to its extreme ability to tolerate harsh conditions lethal to most life forms. The moss is well known for its ability to tolerate drought conditions, but researchers report in the journal The Innovation that it can also survive freezing temperatures as low as −196°C, high levels of gamma radiation, and simulated Martian conditions involving these three stressors combined. In all cases, prior dehydration seemed to help the plants cope.

Scientists sequence entire genome of Australian bilby

Under pressure from predatory foxes and cats and competing with feral rabbits, the Greater bilby has lost more than 80% of its habitat. Conservation work led by Professor Carolyn Hogg is designed to help save the bilby from extinction.

Petrol sales up 4%, diesel 1% in June

Fuel sales data from April to June indicates a growth in petrol and diesel consumption, with petrol sales rising by 4.2% and diesel sales by 0.7% year-on-year. The aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sales also saw increases, reflecting a positive trend in the national oil product demand.

Astronomers discover a peculiar radio galaxy

Using the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR), astronomers have discovered a new radio galaxy. The newfound galaxy, designated J0011+3217, showcases peculiar features, including a one-sided secondary lobe. The finding was reported in a research paper published June 21 on the pre-print server arXiv.

Scientists show that Urm1 protects proteins in stress situations

To prevent proteins from being damaged during cellular stress, they are concentrated in so-called stress granules. Scientists from the department of Cellular Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry have now been able to show for the first time that the protein Urm1 has a critical role in this process.
