A wobble from Mars could be sign of dark matter, MIT study finds

Boston MA (SPX) Sep 19, 2024 - In a new study, MIT physicists propose that if most of the dark matter in the universe is made up of microscopic primordial black holes - an idea first proposed in the 1970s - then these gravitational dwarfs should zoom through our solar system at least once per decade. A flyby like this, the researchers predict, would introduce a wobble into Mars' orbit, to a degree that today's technology could actually detect.

Such a detection could lend support to the idea... Читать дальше...

NASA Develops Process to Create Very Accurate Eclipse Maps

Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 20, 2024 - New NASA research reveals a process to generate extremely accurate eclipse maps, which plot the predicted path of the Moon's shadow as it crosses the face of Earth. Traditionally, eclipse calculations assume that all observers are at sea level on Earth and that the Moon is a smooth sphere that is perfectly symmetrical around its center of mass. As such, these calculations do not take into account different elevations on Earth or the Moon's cratered, uneven surface. Читать дальше...

AI development cannot be left to market whim, UN experts warn

United Nations, United States (AFP) Sept 19, 2024 - The development of artificial intelligence should not be guided by market forces alone, UN experts cautioned on Thursday, calling for the creation of tools for global cooperation.

But they held back from suggesting the creation of a muscular worldwide governing body to oversee the rollout and evolution of a technology, the proliferation of which has raised fears around biases, misuse and dependence.
