How are new assessments working out in the classroom?

This year, Alberta Education is mandating screening assessments in both literacy and numeracy for students in Grades 1-3, twice a year. The new assessments are meant to help teachers identify additional learning needs earlier and provide an opportunity to get to know students. But the union representing public school teachers in Calgary says the new screening tools can be difficult to administer in overcrowded classrooms.
