Modern ‘Technoculture’ Makes the World Feel Unnaturally Godless

In his 1996 novel, In the Beauty of the Lilies, John Updike has a fictional Reformed Presbyterian minister feel his faith abandon him like an exhale, leaving his “habitual mental contortions decisively relaxed.” For this minister, the experience was one of relief, “an immense strain of justification” lifted “at a blow.” Unbelief, in this sense, Read more...

Latino Churches’ Vibrant Testimony

The common language of worship has a way of capturing the heart even when the mind cannot understand. I remembered this as I wiped my tears while Spanish-speaking Christians sang passionately around me at The Sent Summit conference in Orlando last month. Though my tourist-level Spanish could not bear the weight of references to the Read more...

The 2024 election and your retirement: How to stay financially prepared regardless of who wins

The 2024 elections are right around the corner, and it’s been one of the most contentious campaign seasons in recent memory. Whoever is elected this year could help shape how the program is funded and whether benefits are cut and by how much. But Social Security is only one of several issues impacting retirement planning.

The anti-money-laundering lever that regulators have never used

Regulators have never held a hearing on whether to revoke the charter of a bank convicted of a money-laundering-related violation. As TD Bank nears a "global resolution" in connection with its compliance failures, it's unlikely to buck the trend.

M Residence / TAKATINA

The M Residence is a mid-century house originally built in the 1980s and is nestled on a seven-acre bucolic wooded area in the Hudson Valley. TAKATINA was approached by the clients, a couple in the creative field, for a gut renovation and addition to modernize the house to suit their lifestyle. Our goal was to create a serene and retreat-like atmosphere while respecting the existing rustic character and highlighting the collection of modern furnishings and art objects.

Republicans’ Revealing Fetish for AI-Enhanced Trump and Vance Pics

Bright and early the morning after the vice-presidential debate, Republican Congressman Mike Collins of Georgia shared a puzzling picture  from his X account of GOP Vice Presidential candidate, Senator J. D. Vance. At first glance, the image masquerades as a conventional political headshot. It features Vance delivering a steely gaze, sitting before a soft blue backdrop framed by an American flag and the state flag of Ohio. Vance is wearing the Trumpkin uniform of a blue suit, crisp white dress shirt... Читать дальше...

Dreading the Return of the Trump Era’s Exhausting Palace Intrigue

For four days in mid-September, the most visited page on Wikipedia was the one that covered Laura Loomer. This sudden spike in interest coincided with a rash of press coverage around Loomer and her newfound proximity to Trump. The New York Times headlined their piece “Laura Loomer, a Social Media Instigator, Is Back at Trump’s Side,” while Semafor went with “Republicans Fear Laura Loomer Is Influencing Donald Trump.”

The New Supreme Court Session Opens Monday. It Will Not Be Pretty.

The new Supreme Court session will begin, as it always does, on the first Monday in October. As the justices take their seats come October 7, they will do so with ever fewer Americans impressed by the black robes, the Vatican-like intrigues taking place in the marble redoubt on First Street, the authoritative tone of increasingly partisan decisions that are almost impossible to reverse, no matter how infuriating or inexplicable. According to Gallup, only 24 percent of Americans who are or lean Democratic now trust the high court... Читать дальше...
