Oxygen and chlorine evolution without noble metals: Electrode potential transforms MXene surfaces

MXenes are a class of two-dimensional materials that were discovered in 2011. Theoretical studies previously predicted that they would not be catalytically active in anodic processes. Researchers led by Prof. Dr. Kai S. Exner, head of the Department of Theoretical Catalysis and Electrochemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), have now disproved this theory using multiscale modeling.

Current generated by the quantum Hall effect found to have additional magnetic properties

The quantum Hall effect, a fundamental effect in quantum mechanics, not only generates an electric but also a magnetic current. It arises from the motion of electrons on an orbit around the nuclei of atoms. This has been demonstrated by the calculations of a team from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), which are now published in the journal Physical Review Letters. These results can potentially be used to develop new types of inexpensive and energy-efficient devices.

The post amassed 120 million views and sparked a lot of anger in response to its title: Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose.

Study suggests union membership leads to a longer life

A trio of statisticians at the University of Minnesota has found an association between union membership and lower mortality rates. In their study published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, Tom VanHeuvelen, Xiaowen Han and Jane VanHeuvelen analyzed data mortality rates tabulated in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and calculated the impacts on longevity for people who belong to unions.
