Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Lioness’ Renewed for Season 2 on Paramount+

Paramount+ has renewed superproducer Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller “Lioness” for Season 2, the streaming service announced Thursday.

The renewal comes with a slightly modified title; previously the show was known as “Special Ops: Lioness,” leaving open the possibility that it could be an anthology series focusing on a different special operations team each season.

But the original story will continue, and stars Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and Nicole Kidman. Saldaña and Kidman will continue to serve as executive producers, and Freeman will be upped to series regular after recurring in Season 1.

The series also stars Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, and Hannah Love Lanier.

“Lioness” tells the story of Cruz Manuelos (De Oliveira), a Marine who is recruited into the CIA’s all-female Lioness program and sent to infiltrate a terrorist organization by befriending the suspected leader’s daughter, Aaliyah (Stephanie Nur). Saldaña plays her handler, Joe, an officer whose work in the field leads to troubles at home.

When the series premiered last summer, it became Paramount+’s most-watched premiere at the time, with nearly six million total viewers in its first week across Paramount+ globally and a linear preview on the Paramount Network. (Currently, “Sonic the Hedgehog” spinoff “Knuckles” is Paramount+’s most-watched show.)

Its long gap between premiere and renewal is unusual for a successful show, but is par for the course with Sheridan’s empire, as he is working on so many projects at any given moment with such top-level talent that his shows do not follow typical scheduling patterns.

A Season 2 premiere window has not been set.

Next up, Sheridan has Season 3 of “Mayor of Kingstown,” which premieres in June. The final season of “Yellowstone” and the Texas oil industry drama “Landman” are actively in the works, and a “Yellowstone” sequel series is also in development.
