BBC announces two BAFTA-nominated comedies are returning to screens after string of glowing reviews

BBC COMEDY has recommissioned two popular comedy shows for a second series after successful launches last year.

Juice and Such Brave Girls will both have a second outing at the Beeb.

Actor and comedian Mawaan Rizwan wrote, created and stars in Juice.

He is nominated for Best Male Comedy Performance at the British Academy Television Awards.

Mawaan is also among the nominees for Best Writer: Comedy and Best Emerging Talent: Fiction at the British Academy Television Craft Awards.

Juice follows a character named Jamma, played by Mawaan, who wants to be the centre of attention.

Unfortunately for Jamma, his family constantly steal his thunder.

Mum, Farida (Shahnaz Rizwan) always makes everything about her while dad Saif (Jess Mirza) ignores him.

Meanwhile, brother Isaac (Nabhaan Rizwan) is the star at work – the one place Jamma feels like he does well.

Although Jamma does get validation from boyfriend Guy (Russell Tovey), he can’t handle it and goes into overdrive.

Juice first premiered in autumn 2023, with Mawaan’s real-life mother and brother starring opposite him in the show.

Born in Pakistan, Mawaan started his career as a YouTuber before moving onto roles in television and streaming programming.

He has appeared in shows such as Doctor Who and Vera as well as writing episodes for Netflix hit Sex Education.

Mawaan also competed on the tenth series of Taskmaster with Johnny Vegas, Daisy May Cooper, Katherine Parkinson and Richard Herring.

Mawaan said: “I can’t wait to dive back into a magical world with magical people once again.

“Shoutout to everyone who’s championed this beautiful, bonkers show… and everyone who hated on the bowl cut.”

Such Brave Girls was written and created by Kat Sadler, who also plays the lead role of Josie Johnson.

The show follows a dysfunctional single-parent family with other cast members including Louise Brealey and Lizzie Davidson.

Such Brave Girls has been met with critical acclaim, receiving a nomination for Best Scripted Comedy at the upcoming British Academy Television Awards.

Jon Petrie, Head of Comedy BBC says: “Mawaan and Kat are two of the funniest new voices in British comedy; in Juice and Such Brave Girls they created completely unique shows that made a real impact and were much-loved by audiences.

“It’s a no brainer to have them back for a second time!”
