Halfmoon man arrested on 35 counts of animal abuse

The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Derrick Sud-Nieves, 29, of Halfmoon, in connection to an animal cruelty investigation.

HALFMOON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Derrick Sud-Nieves, 29, of Halfmoon, in connection to an animal abuse investigation. According to police, 35 dogs were found in deplorable living conditions on Thursday at a home on Brookwood Road during a search alongside the Halfmoon Code Enforcement Department.

The Sheriff's Office says that the animals were seized from the house and turned over to the care of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The MHHS stated that the Saratoga County Animal Shelter was able to take in five of the dogs, while the other 30 are still with the Humane Society.

Sud-Nieves was taken into custody and charged with 35 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals: failure to provide proper sustenance. Police say additional charges are still possible.

After being processed, Sud-Nieves was released with an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in the Halfmoon Town Court at a later date. This investigation remains ongoing.
