Canada Council announces Prix de Rome and J.B.C. Watkins Award winners
The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded three prizes that showcase the potential of emerging architects and highlight the contribution of practicing architects.

The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) recently announced the recipients for the Prix de Rome in Architecture — Professional; Prix de Rome in Architecture — Emerging Practitioners, and J.B.C. Watkins Award
CCA contributes to the creative and diverse arts and literary scene and supports its presence across Canada and around the world. The organization also recognizes the potential of emerging architects and the contribution of practicing architects by awarding these three prizes.
The winners are.
The winner of the Prix de Rome in Architecture — Professional is Modern Office of Design + Architecture. Founded by architects Ben Klumper and Dustin Couzens in 2013, Modern Office of Design + Architecture is a Calgary-based practice in the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscape and design.
Modern Office of Design + Architecture’s project, called PAST/forward, explores the disruptive potential of robotics at the scale of architecture, and provides an opportunity for architects to re-enter the world of “making.” It aims to take a “PAST/forward” approach to a time when, as OMA’s Reinier de Graaf put it, architects “leveraged the benedictions of science and technology towards the betterment of society.”
The winner of the Prix de Rome in Architecture — Emerging Practitioners is Conrad Speckert, an intern architect at LGA Architectural Partners with degrees from McGill University and the University of Waterloo. He is currently leading a Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation-sponsored research project to develop alternative solutions to the building code requirement for two staircases in small multi-unit residential buildings and has proposed a corresponding change to the National Building Code of Canada.
The winner of the J.B.C. Watkins Award: Architecture is Alena Beth Rieger, an architect and PhD fellow at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO). Her research explores 20th century building demolitions and material provenance. Rieger holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Architecture from the AHO, and has professional experience working with exhibitions, publications, architecture and teaching.
