Luxury shop Harrods flogging box of cherries for eye-watering £84 – but store chief says ‘our customers don’t care’

LUXURY department store Harrods is flogging cherries — for £1.69 each.

The famous London shop has the dangly fruit priced at £165 a kilo — with a punnet weighing 508g and containing around 50 costing £83.82.

Staff say the grower in San Francisco is rated the world’s best — but aghast punters say the fruits are “way too expensive”.

Just one cherry costs about the same as a small pot from Lidl — and a kilo at Tesco works out at £12.50.

Harrods floor shop assistant Jen Ramirez, 28, said the exorbitant cost was down to the cherries’ “unique sweetness”.

She said: “Some people are very surprised when they see the price, but we have customers that don’t care because they’re looking for quality. A lot of people buy them.”

One US couple who are staying in London said: “They’re beautiful but we can get half a kilo back home for about £8.”

The monster price tag was spotted by shopper Christina Gaidu who wrote: “Shopping in Harrods Food Hall and I almost bought them but then I saw the price.”

One follower on Instagram wrote: “It’s cheaper to fly to Spain and buy 5kg with €10.”

Another added: “Totally ridiculous.”

The cherries, however, are not the most expensive fruit at Harrods where a Japanese crown melon displayed on red silk was priced at £150.

Delay for strawbs

THE strawberry season has been delayed by a fortnight due to the cold and wet weather.

But the first fruits at the end of May will be big and juicy, farmers say.

Strawberries have been slower to ripen with less sun in recent weeks.

Nick Marston, chairman of British Berry Growers, said: “Strawberries (will) grow to become particularly large and juicy. It will be a fantastic year.”
