Jamie Carragher reveals key difference between Ten Hag and Arteta that could spell doom for Man Utd manager
JAMIE CARRAGHER believes Erik ten Hag’s position differs from Mikel Arteta because he was not Ineos’ appointment.
The Manchester United manager is under growing pressure in his role at Old Trafford.
Another humiliating defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace has raised questions about Ten Hag’s future once again.
And the Dutchman could find himself on the verge of the sack if United lose to Arsenal on Sunday.
The Gunners are still aiming for the title and have been transformed under Arteta, who also struggled early on at The Emirates with two eighth-placed finishes.
However he was given time to turn things around, partly thanks to winning the FA Cup in 2021.
Carragher believes Ten Hag may not be afforded the same patience because Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke appointed Arteta, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe had no say in the hiring of Ten Hag and may want his own man.
The pundit wrote in his Telegraph column: “Arteta’s Arsenal performance levels never sank as consistently low as those of Ten Hag’s Manchester United.
“None of Arteta’s most disappointing losses were remotely comparable to the 4-0 defeat by Crystal Palace on Monday night.
“Worryingly for Ten Hag, the biggest difference is he is not the owner’s appointment. The Arsenal board staked their reputation on Arteta coming good.

Carragher also pointed out the difference in experience between the two managers, and the restructure that was need in North London.
He continued: “Arteta had never managed before taking over at Arsenal. Stan Kroenke took a risk by hiring a 37-year-old and in doing so committed the club to a long-term vision.
“Arteta was his man, and there is no point headhunting such a young coach and getting rid after the first two years of extensive rebuilding.
“Arteta inherited a team which had failed to qualify for the Champions League for three years and needed major reconstruction.
“High earners like Mesut Őzil, David Luiz and Alexandre Lacazette needed offloading, as did expensive mistakes like Nicolas Pépé.”
