On Saturday, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari received immunity from prosecution in two alleged corruption cases as a head of state.

Mr. Zardari has been accused of banking corruption in a housing project and corruption in a water supply project.

The anti-corruption court ruled on Saturday, May 11, that no judicial proceedings against him could be initiated from the time Asif Ali Zardari was designated as the President of Pakistan, and any cases previously filed against him are also halted.

In one of these cases, Mr. Zardari was accused of creating a fictitious company, then partnering with this fictitious company in the “Park Lane” construction project, borrowing 1.5 billion Pakistani Rupees from the National Bank of Pakistan in the name of the fictitious company, and then transferring it to the personal account of his main company in a private bank.

In another case, Mr. Zardari is accused of corruption in a water supply project in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

During Imran Khan’s government in 2019, the Pakistan anti-corruption agency arrested Mr. Zardari in a banking corruption case. The agency has now arrested and imprisoned Imran Khan on charges of financial corruption.
