Deadly floods hit country; Karzai and Abdullah call for urgent aid to flood victims

Simultaneously, dozens of lives were lost due to recent floods in several provinces of the country. Hamid Karzai and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah appealed for assistance from aid organizations for the flood victims.

Hamid Karzai, the former president of the country, on Saturday, May 11, in a statement, expressed condolences to the survivors of the recent earthquakes in the country and urged charities and merchants to help the families affected by devastating floods.

However, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the former head of the High Council for National Reconciliation, while expressing condolences to the recent flood victims, said, “We expect aid organizations to expedite assistance to the affected and strive to provide them with the necessary essentials.”

Hamid Karzai and Dr. Abdullah have requested assistance from aid agencies, from this week until now, as a result of the ongoing floods in the provinces of Balkh, Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, Faryab, Badghis, Herat, Ghor, and Kandahar, then a hundred people have been killed or injured, and immense financial losses have been incurred.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban, has recently called for people’s help to the flood victims in the provinces of Balkh, Badakhshan, Ghor, and Herat.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, has urged urgent assistance to the flood-affected people in the country.

He stated that the exact death toll from the recent floods in the country is not yet determined, but the United Nations says that the number of casualties in northern Afghanistan alone exceeds two hundred.
