RPI men's lacrosse historic season ends against Bowdoin

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team was defeated 12-5 today against Bowdoin in the third round of the NCAA tournament this afternoon at ECAV Stadium.

TROY, NY (NEWS10) -- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team was defeated 12-5 today against Bowdoin in the third round of the NCAA tournament this afternoon at ECAV Stadium.

Anthony Mazzella logged a team-high three points, as he recorded a goal and two assists in the setback. Zach Swanson and Caleb Oswari had two points apiece as well. Swanson scored twice, while Oswari had a goal and an assist.

Cooper Roman had a solo strike and Luke Murphy and Angelo Venuto each had a helper for the Engineers.

RPI scored two of the first three goals of the afternoon, however, Bowdoin responded with five straight scores to build a 6-2 advantage in the early stages of the second period.

Roman found the back of the net midway through the frame to bring the margin to 6-3 at halftime. Mazzella and Swanson also provided RPI with scores in the first 30 minutes.

Sitting on a three-goal lead, the Polar Bears came out firing in the second half, as the visitors scored the only two goals of the third period before adding a pair of scores to start the fourth. 

Oswari and Swanson each tallied goals in the fourth period, but the Bowdoin advantage would reach as much as eight in the final stanza. 

Bowdoin goalie Roberts Hobbs turned away 21 shots in net. RPI owned a 52-42 advantage in the shot column, but Hobbs was only beaten five times on the day.

The Engineers finish the spring with an overall record 17-3, marking the most victories in a single season in program history.
