Danae revealed that her kids were badly sunburnt, despite using sunscreen[/caption]

Ironically, Danae wasn’t the one who had been enjoying the sun.

Having jetted off with their grandmother for a luxurious five-day break in Hawaii, her two kids returned with intense sunburn.

After a few hours, the influencer’s teens started to suffer from excruciatingly itchy skin and her daughter was left in tears.

This is despite using sunscreen, with the content creator telling her followers: “I found out that you’re supposed to reapply sunscreen every hour when you are in the pool…even if it’s waterproof. I wasn’t aware.”

Desperate to soothe their ‘hells itch’, the mum-of-two searched the internet for a cure.

Rather than spending a small fortune on after-sun cream, Danae found a recipe which used ingredients you probably have at home already.

For her DIY skincare, the content creator used an unscented moisturiser as a base to combine the ingredients.

Products Sudocream or E45 cream will work just as well, but you need to ensure it is unscented and not an ointment – as this can clog pores.

Next, she decanted about half the tub and added a cheap Hydrocortisone cream to give her kids some much-needed relief from the constant itching.

However, it was the third ingredient that surprised fans as the TikTok star revealed that she’d added a few drops of peppermint oil to the mix.

While this may seem like a strange choice, the essential oil is packed with menthol which helps to dilate blood vessels and cool the skin.

Having mixed these three skin-nourishing products, the mum popped the cream in the fridge before applying the cream to her kids’ skin.

Just five minutes later, their skin had dramatically cleared up.

“They were able to go to sleep [and] it has not come back,” she revealed, adding that both her children raved about the ‘amazing’ cream.

If you are tempted to make this DIY after sun, you can pick up most of the ingredients for under a tenner.

You can pick up Hydrocortisone cream in Boots for under £4[/caption]

For instance, Boots currently has the Skincalm Bite & Sting Relief 1% Hydrocortisone Cream for just £3.89 right now.

Meanwhile, you can order Peppermint essential oil from Amazon for as little as £2.97.

With the warmer weather now here to stay, you can also pick up items like Vitamin E and Aloe Vera gel to help calm sunburnt skin.

Available at most chemists for only a few pounds, these can also be mixed in to soothe damaged skin over the summer.

If only we’d known about this DIY last year.

How to protect yourself in the sun

If you are wanting to avoid sunburn this summer, here are some easy tips and tricks

  1. Stay shady – on bright days, it can feel almost impossible to avoid the sun. However, you should aim to be indoors or in the shade from 11 am to 3 pm as this is when the sun is strongest
  2. The S Factor – You’ve probably heard this a million times, but you need to be topping up your sunscreen every 1-2 hours – even if you buy factor 50.
  3. Leave your hat on – Wearing a sunhat or cap no only protects the delicate skin on your face, it will also prevent your scalp from being burnt.
  4. Cover up – even if you just throw on a t-shirt, extra clothing will stop your skin from getting damaged.
  5. Specs Appeal – now is also the time to dig your sunglasses out of the drawer, as these will protect your eye from increased sun  exposure.
