I upgraded my deck for less than $100 – it adds a bit more ambiance, ‘disco mode’ is a huge hit with the kids

ONE homeowner has shared how they decked out their deck.

The affordable DIY project was also kid-approved.

LIGHT IT UP

Redditor Breadtangle revealed that the “inexpensive upgrade” incorporated LED lighting.

“We spend a lot of time on our deck in the evenings, but our porch light was always too harsh, we wanted something to provide a bit more ambiance,” they said.

“This was a major improvement for us and cost less than $100.”

In an attempt to take the deck from drab to decorative, they purchased a rope lights kit with 300 LEDs.

They also used a 22 Gauge 4 Pin Extension Wire on Amazon, which sells for $12.99.

The RGB set allows for easy command over both the “light color” and “intensity.”

It also includes fade modes as well as a microphone and a mode to strobe to music.

DISCO DANCING

The deck was now truly lit – literally – in purple, blue, and green shades.

Their kids were especially enjoying the lights.

“While a silly novelty for us, ‘disco mode’ was a huge hit with the kids,” they said.

The youngsters also preferred a “slow fade” from one hue to another.

They explained how not shielding direct viewing of the LEDS allowed for more “illumination of the deck itself.”

“If we find the light harsh at night, this kit lets us turn it down,” they said.

SEASONALLY SAFE

The Redditor said that the new lights work in all seasons.

However, they had a piece of advice for other people trying a similar upgrade.

“While it was fine at night, the range of the remote was no more than a few feet if the IR receiver was in direct sunlight,” they said.

They also shared which color scheme they liked best.

“This orange hue is probably my favorite for just regular use. Getting an accurate color balance for these photos was a struggle, but the lights here are set to match the color of the tiki torch.”

Others shared how they used LEDs to upgrade their own spaces.

“I use the same stuff that you bought for lighting in my basement that I’ve attached to the forward face of a couple of rafters,” said one Redditor.

“I’ve used them daily for about two years now and I haven’t had any issues. Even if they go bad every year, at the price you pay, it isn’t too big of a deal,” they added.

“For me the best color is the slightly orange one, just above the yellow on the pad. It’s the perfect reading color.”
