I made a simple upgrade to my backyard – people say it ‘looks so much better’ but there’s a practical upside too

A DIY fan gave their backyard a facelift with a simple tweak.

They said the home renovation project wasn’t just aesthetically pleasing, it also has some practicality to it.

Redditor Technicolortypea posted the backyard glow-up on the social media platform.

“Decided to stain the fence,” they said, posting before and after images.

The DIYer included pictures of the job, with a stark difference between the two.

They also explained what they did to make the upgrade come to life.

“If you’re able to then a sprayer would be the easiest way, but I used a paint roller for the larger sections and filled the gaps in with a paint brush,” they said.

“My number one recommendation would be to stir the stain very well before applying.

“I completely forgot to the first time around and when I went to apply the stain all I got was mostly oil and none of the stain pigment.”

NOT JUST NICE TO LOOK AT

Several Redditors weighed in on the new look, with one asking about the ability of the stain to withstand the elements.

“Does [the] stain itself provide some protection from rain or do you have to add a sealant on top of the stain?” one asked.

“It’s a preservative as well,” the original poster replied.

They added that the website of the staining product itself promises protection from water as well as prevention of mold, mildew, and wood rot.

The Redditor said they applied the product using a “roller for the large sections and then I brushed in the gaps.”

DIY FANS WEIGH IN

Fellow DIYers chimed in on the fence stain and gave their opinions on it.

“Looks so much better,” one wrote.

“Is this something you have to negotiate with your neighbors?” another asked.

“Do you stain or not stain their side? Do they get a say in the color?

“This sort of quasi-shared property is so foreign to me.”

“It’s typically not something you have to negotiate,” the original poster replied.

“The common courtesy would be to let them know you’ll be staining your side of the fence and will do so with hopefully very minimal — if at all — bleeding to their side.

“Also want to give the neighbor a heads up in case they have any vegetation or materials they would want to cover before you begin staining.”
