The water canal project, envisioned by the late Japanese doctor and humanitarian Tetsu Nakamura, has been successfully completed in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province.

Nakamura, who dedicated many years to development in the province, was tragically killed in 2019.

Originally from Japan, Nakamura had been granted honorary citizenship in Afghanistan, reflecting the deep connections he forged with the country through his extensive humanitarian work.

Nakamura’s primary focus in Nangarhar was constructing water canals, which were crucial for irrigation and agriculture in the arid region.

Despite his untimely death, Nakamura’s projects were initially halted but were eventually resumed with support from the Japanese government, underscoring his lasting impact on the region.

Throughout his tenure in Nangarhar, Nakamura spearheaded the construction of multiple health centres and completed over 1,600 projects related to irrigation, canal construction, and clean water access.

His most significant achievement was the creation of a 25-kilometre canal sourced from the Kunar River, which now irrigates hundreds of acres of farmland.

Beyond irrigation, Nakamura also contributed to the community by building a recreation park, digging wells, and setting up agricultural research farms.

Ajmal Stankzai, a representative of the Nakamura Foundation, remarked on Nakamura’s legacy, noting that all the projects he planned have been completed, benefiting thousands of acres of land and millions of people.

In the Kama district, efforts are ongoing to continue Nakamura’s vision. New projects, such as constructing a second canal from the Kunar River, address the area’s severe water shortages.

Following Nakamura’s passing, a non-governmental organization named PMS has taken up the mantle to continue building canals and dams in the region.

The recent completion and inauguration of a 5-kilometre-long canal in Kot district marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to sustain Nakamura’s humanitarian legacy. Government officials expressed gratitude for the continued support in addressing Afghanistan’s challenges.
