Gray On Hanlon, Stevenson & Taking Responsibility

Hibs Interim Head Coach David Gray has urged the players to play for pride in the final two matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

David Gray was named Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season after Nick Montgomery was relieved of his duties following a poor run of results.

Gray took training this morning (Tuesday) at HTC in preparation for our final home game of the season against Motherwell.

Speaking to Hibs TV ahead of the match, Gray admits everyone needs to take responsibility for what has been a disappointing season.

“I think it’s important that there is an accountability from everybody involved. The Manager always has to carry the can, but it is important that we all look at ourselves, the staff, the players, every single person because we know we have not been good enough this season.

“We have underachieved and we have not been good enough. We know it is not going to fix things, but we need to end the season as positively as we can.”

Gray has urged his players to come out fighting from the first whistle and to give the fans something to cheer about.

“You’ve got the opportunity (as players) to play for a fantastic football Club in front of a group of fans that follow us home and away every single week – and are a really passionate set of fans.

“We have a duty to be the best possible professionals we can be and we need to go about that in the right way.”

Wednesday will be an emotional night for Gray’s former team-mates Paul Hanlon and Lewis Stevenson, who will bid farewell to Hibernian FC supporters in what will be their final game at Easter Road for Hibs.

Gray added: “First and foremost, both Lewy and Paul have had fantastic careers and to be at one Club for their whole careers is a fantastic achievement that doesn’t happen very often now.

“They have been here through the highs and the lows, but every single day they come in and are the most professional people you have ever met – they are great role models for young players coming through and they fully deserve to go out on a high.

“They always put the football Club first over anything else, that is the type of people they are.

“It is an important night for them, and it will be an emotional night for them and their families. But on top of that, the most important thing is that we play as well as we can and we get three points.”
