Japan offers emergency aid to Northern Afghanistan after devastating floods

The Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan announced in a press release on Thursday, May 16, that the government of Japan has decided to provide emergency relief goods to Northern Afghanistan in response to recent flood damages.

The press release also said that the relief effort is facilitated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS).

The aid package includes essential supplies such as tents and blankets, aimed at alleviating the immediate hardships faced by the flood-affected communities. This initiative is part of Japan’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and ongoing support for people in crisis situations.

Japan’s decision underscores its dedication to the humanitarian cause and its readiness to assist Afghanistan during such critical times. The Japanese government reaffirms its solidarity with the Afghan people, emphasizing that it will continue to stand by them as they recover from the catastrophic effects of the flooding.

This gesture of support is expected to strengthen ties between Japan and Afghanistan and showcase Japan’s role as a key player in international humanitarian efforts.

Meanwhile, Turkey also extended its support by providing 20 tons of initial aid and 650 tons of humanitarian aid for the flood victims in the country, especially in Baghlan province.

The Turkish government’s humanitarian aid, which includes tents, food items, medicines, clothing, and other essential supplies, will be transported to the recent flood victims via railway within the next few days.

The report said that the Turkish initial humanitarian aid would enter the country through Mazar-i-Sharif airport and the humanitarian aid through the Torghundi port in Herat Province.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar also announced the dispatch of 42 tons of humanitarian aid, including food and necessary equipment, to flood victims in Baghlan Province.

This comes as recent deadly floods in various provinces of the country, including Baghlan, Takhar, Badakhshan, Faryab, and Herat, have resulted in numerous fatalities and significant financial damages.

Previously, the United Nations and several relief organizations had called for the provision of immediate humanitarian aid for the flood victims in the country.

According to the reports, more than 300 people have died in just two districts of Baghlan Province due to the devastating floods.
