Multi-vehicle wreck on I-580 in Oakland kills one

The crash happened at the Grand Avenue exit on eastbound I-580.

OAKLAND — A person died early Friday when several cars were involved in a crash on a freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash on eastbound Interstate 580 happened about 12:20 a.m. at the Grand Avenue off-ramp. The CHP said many vehicles were involved but did not have a specific number on Friday morning.

The CHP issued an alert for severe traffic after the wreck, as all eastbound lanes were blocked at the Grand Avenue exit. All the lanes were back open at 1:15 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the person killed immediately, pending notification of relatives.

More information on the wreck was expected to be released later Friday.
