TOPEKA (KSNT) - The income needed to be middle class in Topeka is less than most cities in the U.S.

SmartAsset used Pew Research's definition of middle income to determine what is needed to be considered middle class in 345 U.S. cities. According to SmartAsset, the income limits to define the middle class have increased as Americans feel a financial squeeze.

Across the nation, New Jersey had the highest cost with households needing to make $64,224 to $192,692 to be considered middle-class. On the other end, Mississippi had the lowest-earning middle class with a range of $35,142 and $105,438.

Kansas ranked 34th in the U.S. for middle-class income. The state median income according to SmartAsset is $68,925 with an upper limit of $137,850 and a lower limit of $45,945.

Across all 345 cities, the median household income was $77,345 making the upper and lower limits for middle-class $51,558 and $154,590. In Topeka, the median household income is $50,709 with a lower limit of $33,803 and an upper limit of $101,418.
